The Head of Development, Bulgaria – M Renewables team is responsible for leading and managing the end-to-end development of renewable energy projects from concept to construction-ready stage, primarily solar, from early-stage concept through to commissioning. This role requires a deep understanding of renewable energy project development, regulatory frameworks, and commercial structuring within the renewables industry.
Your role will encompass:
- Define and execute the company’s renewable energy project development strategy in alignment with corporate objectives.
- Identify new market opportunities and pipeline growth strategies across target regions.
- Lead, mentor, and build a multidisciplinary development team (engineering, permitting, legal, grid, and finance).
- Oversee the full project lifecycle: site selection, feasibility studies, land agreements, environmental assessments, permitting, and grid connection.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and risk assessments to ensure timely delivery of ready-to-build (RTB) projects.
- Coordinate with engineering teams to ensure optimized plant design and compliance with local regulations and technical standards.
- Secure necessary permits, licenses, and approvals from authorities and stakeholders.
- Manage due diligence and project documentation to support project financing and sales.
- Monitor and report on the status of ongoing renewable projects to ensure timely delivery.
- Review planning documentation for new projects and liaise with planning consultants to ensure compliance and discharge conditions.
- Support the grid team with planning and land-related issues for grid connection assets.
- Prepare regular project updates and reports for internal stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, grid operators, local communities, and investors.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and local legislation.
- Represent the company in public hearings, industry associations, and key stakeholder meetings
What you bring to the role:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, or related field. MBA or postgraduate degree in Business / Project Management (preferred)
- 10+ years in renewable energy development, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
- Proven track record of delivering utility-scale solar PV/BESS projects to RTB stage.
- Prior experience in project management and team leadership role is mandatory
- Strong understanding of land acquisition, permitting, and grid connection processes.
- Experience with financial modeling, PPA negotiations, and project financing.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
- Excellent communication skills in Bulgarian and English
- Familiar with geospatial and design tools including QGIS and AutoDesk applications (e.g., AutoCAD)
- Willingness to travel as needed for project development and stakeholder meetings
