Construction Support Technician Apprenticeship - Murton, County Durham

Metlen Energy & Metals, as part of a consortium with GE Vernova, is helping to deliver Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) Project. EGL1 is a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable link being jointly developed by Scottish Power Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission. It will be built between the Dunbar area of East Lothian, and Murton in County Durham. Converter stations and new substations are required onshore at each end. The convertor station works will be delivered by our consortium.

As a Construction Support Technician Apprentice, you will play a vital role in assisting the site construction team by providing technical and administrative support on-site and in the office. This apprenticeship will give you hands-on experience across various aspects of the construction process, from planning and documentation to

site coordination and safety compliance. You will develop essential skills while working under the guidance of experienced professionals, gaining the knowledge required for a future career in construction, civil engineering, or project management.

 

 Key responsibilities, accountabilities, and decision ownership:

 

  • Assist with reading and interpreting construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Support the preparation of construction plans, schedules, and documentation.
  • Help with quality control and inspection procedures.
  • Support site supervisors with daily operations and logistical planning.
  • Report and record site progress, issues, and delays.
  • Maintain clear communication between site teams, subcontractors, and office staff.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Help conduct site safety inspections and complete reports.
  • Promote, in-line with the “connecting together” project culture program, a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Assist with documentation such as risk assessments, method statements, and daily site reports.
  • Maintain organised records of project documentation.
  • Help with digital and paper filing, procurement tracking, and timesheets.

 

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

 

  • Genuine interest in the construction industry and a desire to grow into a site leadership role.
  • Proactive mindset with a willingness to take the initiative and solve problems.
  • Good IT skills as well as excellent numerary and analytical skills, including strong attention to detail. 
  • Team player with excellent communication skills and a positive approach towards others. Should something not seem right, you will have the confidence to challenge what you see.
  • Excellent time management– you will be able to manage different tasks at the same time.

Essential requirements & technical/professional qualifications:

 

  • The right to work in the United Kingdom (without sponsorship)
  • Able to write and speak English.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
  • At least four GCSEs at Grade 4 / C or above, plus 1 A Level or 2 AS Levels; or BTEC National in a relevant construction/engineering qualification; or T-Level or an equivalent qualification.
