Construction Quantity Surveying Technician Apprenticeship - Murton

Metlen Energy & Metals, as part of a consortium with GE Vernova, is helping to deliver Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) Project. EGL1 is a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable link being jointly developed by Scottish Power Energy Networks and National Grid Electricity Transmission. It will be built between the Dunbar area of East Lothian, and Murton in County Durham. Converter stations and new substations are required onshore at each end. The convertor station works will be delivered by our consortium.

 

The Construction Quantity Surveyor (QS) Apprentice will support the day-to-day financial and commercial management at our construction site at Murton. Under the supervision of experienced professionals, you will assist in cost estimation, contract administration, and budgeting while also undertaking undertaking a Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Technician apprenticeship.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to learn the core responsibilities of quantity surveying while contributing to the successful delivery of a nationally significant project.

 

Key responsibilities, accountabilities, and decision ownership:

  • Assist in preparing cost estimates, budgets, and cost plans.
  • Monitor project expenditure and help produce cost reports.
  • Support in the valuation of work done (VOWD) on-site and preparing interim and final payment applications.
  • Assist with contract preparation and management, including NEC (New Engineering Contract) and JCT(Joint Contracts Tribunal) contracts.
  • Help ensure compliance with contractual obligations and project requirements.
  • Support the team in assessing variations and change orders.
  • Carry out site measurements and assist in preparing bills of quantities.
  • Support the team in value engineering and lifecycle costing.
  • Attend meetings to gain understanding of construction processes and commercial operations.
  • Assist in the preparation of project reports and documentation.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, architects, and subcontractors.

 

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

 

  • Genuine interest in quantity surveying as a career.
  • Proactive mindset with a willingness to take the initiative and solve problems.
  • Good IT skills as well as excellent numerary and analytical skills, including strong attention to detail. 
  • Team player with excellent communication skills and a positive approach towards others. Should something not seem right, you will have the confidence to challenge what you see.
  • Excellent time management– you will be able to manage different tasks at the same time.

 

Essential requirements & technical/professional qualifications:

 

  • The right to work in the United Kingdom (without sponsorship)
  • Able to write and speak English.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
  • At least four GCSEs at Grade 4 / C or above, plus 1 A Level or 2 AS Levels; or BTEC National in a relevant construction/engineering qualification; or T-Level or an equivalent qualification.
