We are seeking an Indigenous Relations Manager to lead and strengthen Metlen's relationships and strategic partnerships with Indigenous communities, governments and businesses across Canada, with a primary focus on Ontario-based renewable energy projects under the LT2 Procurement. This role will work closely with both the Project Development and Business Development teams to execute on the company’s greenfield project strategy, fostering Indigenous participation in utility-scale solar, battery energy storage (BESS), and potentially data center projects.
The Indigenous Relations Manager will lead efforts to establish equity and participation partnerships, facilitate consultation and engagement processes, and support the co-development of meaningful community benefit strategies. The successful candidate will bring strong relationship-building skills, experience in Indigenous economic development, and the ability to navigate diverse governance, financing, and regulatory environments. This Role will Encompass
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with Indigenous communities, councils, and development corporations in Ontario and other Canadian regions.
- Originate, negotiate, and execute Indigenous equity and participation partnerships for renewable energy projects, including those submitted under the LT2 procurement.
- Coordinate closely with Project Development and Business Development teams to ensure Indigenous engagement is fully integrated into project strategy, design, and execution.
- Lead and document consultation and engagement activities in alignment with project permitting and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and negotiate community benefit frameworks that create real and lasting value for local communities.
- Conduct research and analysis on potential Indigenous partners, financing tools, and capacity-building opportunities.
- Participate in strategic discussions to ensure Indigenous priorities, values, and feedback inform project design and decision-making.
- Represent Metlen at community meetings, conferences, and industry forums, serving as a trusted and transparent company ambassador.
- Maintain comprehensive records of engagement, agreements, and outcomes.
- Ensure all activities are conducted with authenticity, respect, and adherence to Metlen’s ESG and Truth & Reconciliation principles
What you Bring to the Role
- 3+ years experience in Indigenous Relations, community partnerships, or economic development, preferably in renewable energy or major infrastructure sectors
- Established relationships with Indigenous governments and organizations in Ontario and other Canadian regions.
- Experience structuring and negotiating partnership or equity participation agreements.
- Understanding of regulatory frameworks and permitting pathways for renewable projects on both private and Crown lands.
- Experience working collaboratively with government agencies, utilities, and Indigenous communities.
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, Public Policy or related field
- Equivalent experience in Indigenous relations, community engagement or economic development will be considered
- Deep understanding of Indigenous governance, rights, and economic development structures in Ontario and across Canada
- Proven experience building and managing partnerships between Indigenous communities and the private sector, ideally in energy, infrastructure, or natural resource projects
- Strong understanding of Indigenous equity and participation models, including joint ventures, limited partnerships, and financing mechanisms (e.g., First Nations Finance Authority, Indigenous trusts, or community investment vehicles).
- Demonstrated success supporting Indigenous participation in renewable energy procurements (e.g., IESO LT1/LT2, AESO, BC Hydro).
- Experience facilitating consultation processes and developing community benefits programs that reflect local priorities and values.
- Familiarity with Crown land development and tenure processes considered a strong asset.
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external advisors to align engagement activities with overall project and business development strategies.
- Excellent negotiation, diplomacy, and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Strong research and analytical ability to evaluate partnership, funding, and regulatory frameworks.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and cultural humility.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical and financial information clearly.
